Abstract

MIG/MAG-brazing has been reported to be an interesting alternative to conventional MAG-welding especially for thin sheet applications. However, there is lack of mechanical data and an adequate process understanding. The quality of the MIG/MAG-brazed jointshas sometimes been reported to be unacceptable primarily due to coarse adhering spatter. Extensive MIG/MAG brazing trials were performed in order to optimise the quality of the joints and minimise the occurrence of coarse adhering spatter. Mechanical data(especially static peel strength) was also generated. The results show that it is inmany cases possible to achieve nearly spatter free joints of good quality. However, the peel strength was in all cases found to be inferior to corresponding conventional MAGwelds. Unacceptable cracking was found in stainless steel joints and somecombinations with C-Mn steel. The causes are proposed to be further investigated.
