Fatigue properties of weld-bonded joints out of Dogal 600 DP – high strength rubber based adhesives compared to one epoxi based adhesive

Johannes Gårdstam

Abstract

Two rubber-based adhesives were evaluated, Elastosol M91 and Betaguard RB10-F, and as a reference one series with epoxy based adhesive, Betamate 1496, was evaluated.

The sheet material that was used in this project was a Dogal 600 DP Z100 with sheet thickness 1.5mm. The sheet was supplied by SSAB tunnplåt.

The H-shaped specimens were manufactured at Swerea KIMAB. A fixture was manufactured to ensure equal adhesive thickness and location of the spot-welds for both shear and peel specimen.

Breakdown of the polymer, which is negative for the polymer, is indicated by changes in the dynamic response. The dynamic response of aged specimens were analysed by a DMA (Dynamic mechanical analysis). Elastosol M91 and Betamate 1496 were slightly affected or not affected at all, which indicates that those adhesives are more resistant to atmospheric corrosion compared to Betaguard RB10-F that was significantly affected.

In combination with spot-welds the Betamate 1496, which is an epoxybased adhesive, performed best fatigue results, followed by Elastosol M91 which was the best rubber-based adhesive. Betaguard RB10-F presented irregular results and the average value was clearly below the other adhesives. For shear tests the spot-welded specimens with the adhesive Elastosol M91, which have been fatigue tested in 80°C showed similar values as those specimens without adhesive. In all cases the specimens were significantly stiffer compared to a spot-welded specimen without an adhesive.
