Tandem-MIG/MAG welding, experiences from the optimisation of the process

Abstract

In this KIMAB Joining Technology Centre report, welding of C-Mn steel (DOMEX 420 MC), stainless steel (EN1.4301) and aluminium (AA6082) with Tandem-MIG/MAG is investigated. The purpose was to investigate the Tandem-MIG/MAG process to build a wide understanding for the response of the process and its operation. Particularly investigated are: process stability, penetration, welding with cored filler wires, and welding in zinc coated steels. A guide to configure the Tandem-MIG/MAG process for application optimisation is presented. There are essentially two approaches to Tandem-MAG welding of C-Mn steels: Welding with large electrode tip interdistance and with synchronised power sources and short electrode tip interdistance. This report recommends, interdistances close to 20 mm for welding of C-Mn steels and stainless steels. For aluminium, interdistances close to 5 mm are recommended. A large interdistance can be just as effective as a short for deep weld penetration. It is the process stability that has the strongest influence on the penetration depth. Both the addition of Helium to the shielding gas and cored filler wires are possible approaches to increase sidewall penetration and welding speed. Weld quality, in terms of weldment transition and porosity, for welded zinc coated steel may not be improved by Tandem-MAG compared to single MAG welding. The main benefit is an approximately 300% increase of the welding speed.
