Methods to perform larger throat thicknesses in welding position standing fillet (PB) with high productivity are of interest to manufacturing industry producing larger objects. This is a pre-study which aims for gathering and evaluating information concerning larger throat thicknesses in this welding position.
Methods of interest chosen for this prestudy were single wire MIG/MAG, submerged arc welding with one or multiple wires, tandem and twin-MIG/MAG and RAPID PROCESSING®. Laserhybrid was not initially included due to small throat thicknesses but added as a supplement. Comparisons were mainly based on welding speed and throat thickness.
For this study a search for published reports and articles was performed but sufficient material was not found. An interview series was conducted gathering additional information from manufacturing industries. In spite of this effort, it was still hard to find enough relevant information concerning this case. A general conclusion is however that more information is needed in this area.
With the results found, it was indicated that throat thicknesses above 6 mm are hard to achieve. Multiple wire methods showed an advantage in welding speed compared to single wire methods (except for RAPID PROCESSING®). It can also be concluded that more precise information is needed concerning reachable results for newer high productivity welding methods.
